The ministry of public administration and home affairs has organised several programmes to mark the 60th anniversary of independence.
These include sporting events, speech singing and essay competitions and tree planting and shramadana campaigns. A five rupee stamp will be issued to commemorate 60th independence day.
The celebrations will commence with an all night pirith chanting on the 2nd of next month at Independence Square. The main Independence Day function will take place at Galle Face grounds under the patronage of the president.
Minister Karu Jayasuriya requests the public to hoist the national flag at all public and private buildings during the independence week.
