Civilian information avert tragedy

Bomb disposal squads rushed towards Mt. Lavania this morning (February 6) on information received of a suspicious parcel left unattended close to the Mt.Lavania district court.

Latest information received from Mt.Lavania Police said that, the parcel was found to be stuffed with clothes.

Meanwhile, Mundalama Police acting on civilian information defused a bomb with the assistance of bomb disposal units, today at 1.a.m. The bomb was found attached to a transformer at the Madurankuliya town, a suburb of Puttalam, Police sources said. LTTE elements have intensified sabotage activities in southern areas targeting innocents and property to divert the intensifying military onslaught in North and Wanni at LTTE a strategy doomed to failure, a Police official said.

The citizens of Madurankuliya ought to be appalled for their vigilance and assistance rendered to security forces and Police, Mundalama Police said.

Earlier, at 12.a.m a high voltage transformer was reported damaged when an explosive charger blew off at Chilaw, area Police sources said. According to Chilaw Police the damaged transformer was located in close proximity of the "Randaluwa" Catholic Church along the Kottage Road.

The area Electricity Board officials acted promptly restoring power supply within an hour, Chilaw Police sources said.
