US Congressman Vito Fossella likens LTTE’s Habarana suicide attack on the convoy of buses to the terrorist acts of the much-hated Al-Queda – Walter Jayawardhana

A republican Congressman likened the Habarana suicide bombing by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam to the terrorist acts of the much-hated Al-Queda terrorism all over the world.

"Much like 9-11 and the London Subway bombings, yesterday's attack in Sri Lanka is a reminder that the brutal forces of terrorism are committed to waging their cowardly war against peace and democracy across the globe,” said Congressman Vito Fossella, issuing a statement condemning the Suicide bombing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at Habarana, killing more than 100 people using a suicide bombing ramming an explosive laden truck into buses taking unarmed navy personnel going on home leave.

His statement said, “Many of the sailors killed were about to start vacation leave.”
In a press statement issued a day after the suicide bombing Congressman Fossella who is a leading crusader against terrorism in the United States said,” Much like 9-11 and the London Subway bombings, yesterday's attack in Sri Lanka is a reminder that the brutal forces of terrorism are committed to waging their cowardly war against peace and democracy across the globe.”

Congressman Fossella further said, "I join the U.S. State Department in condemning yesterday's terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka. My deepest sympathies go out to President Mahinda Rajapakse and the Sri Lankan people, especially the families who lost loved ones in this vicious act of terrorism. It is shameful this cowardly attack was unleashed on innocent Sri Lankans only days before peace talks were scheduled to begin.

"Staten Island is home to a large Sri Lankan community, and I know this attack hit close to home for many of them. I remember how devastated so many of them were following the tsunami and the work we did together to help them recover in the weeks and months after.

“From the 1993 attack on the World Trade Center to the attack on the USS Cole and terrorist strikes in Bali, Spain, London, and now Sri Lanka, terror organizations know no bounds,” Fossella said. “That is why all nations must become fully engaged in the War on Terror and devote the needed resources to eliminating terrorism from our planet."

Congressman Vito Fossella who showed a keen interest in helping Sri Lanka when the Tsunami disaster struck the island met President Rajapakse when he was in New York to inquire about the Tsunami recovery work. He was delighted to know Sri Lanka had already built 97,000 houses to help tsunami-affected people who lost their houses.
