Renovation of the Sapugaskanda Refinery commences. The government of Iran will provide financial aid for this renovation.

President Mahinda Rajapakse and Iranian President Mahamoud Ahamedinejad attended a ceremony at the Sapugaskanda refinery premises this morning.

The Iranian President planted a sapling symbolizing the commencement of renovation. Speaking on the occasion, President Rajapakse said the Iranian President’s visit has further strengthened the bilateral relations of the two countries.

The Uma Oya multipurpose irrigation scheme funded by Iran will create a number of benefits to the country. The President said Muslims in the north and east faced a lot of hardships due to terrorism. After two years, the people in the east including Muslim are enjoying their democratic rights with the security forces liberating the area from the terrorists.

Speaking on the occasion, President Ahamadinejad commended the attempts made by the Sri Lankan President to build unity among different communities and steer the country towards development. He expressed the fullest cooperation of Iran to this endeavour.
