Media briefing in support of Wimal W. abruptly halted
A media conference held by a group of JVP local government representatives in support of the Wimal Weerawansa faction came to an abrupt halt after disagreement among its organizers.
The briefing started this morning (May 07th) at the National Library Services Board auditorium in Colombo.
It was attended by JVP provincial councilors Priyanjith Vitarana of Sabaragamuwa, Priyantha Bellana of the West, Nimal Piyatissa of the Central Province and Pradeshiya Sabha members Tusitha Nawala of Kalawana, Prabhath Darshana of Kaduwela and Uman Lebbe Kiyan of Bibile.
At the outset, journalists expressed their displeasure to the organizers for misleading them with a claim that Mr. Weerawansa would attend the briefing.
Later, in his address, Sabaragamuwa councilor Vitarana accused the JVP of having betrayed its original policies and said they have decided to join forces with the dissident faction to bring the party back on the correct path.
The struggle launched internally became futile as the party leadership was no longer accountable to the membership, and hence the decision to take it to the outside, he said.
Rising up at this juncture, PS member Uman Lebbe alleged a conspiracy, and said he had been invited to speak to the media on the plight of sugarcane cultivators in Moneragala.
If Wimal Weerawansa has problems, he could solve them within the party, Mr. Lebbe stressed, adding that the progressive people should not fall prey to the conspiracies.
This led to an exchange of words among the organizers of the media briefing, which had to be abandoned subsequently.
