Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake has been asked not to allow the use of 'a crown' as the symbol of a political party.

'The National Movement for the Protection of Sri Lankan Heritages' has made the request in a letter to the EC.

The movement says that it has no reservations about the political objectives of the newly-registered National Freedom Front, but that it vehemently opposes the party's using 'a crown' as its symbol.

Signed by the movement's Chairman Ven. Medagama Dhammananda Thera and Secretary S. Liyanage, the letter notes that it would be an insult to humanity to allow the use of 'a crown' as a political party symbol.

It adds that the symbols like the crown, the throne, the Lions Flag as well as religious symbols should not be used as political party symbols.
