Local Ports Minister Chamal Rajapakse says the construction work of the Hambanthota International Harbour will be completed within 30 months.

The preliminary construction work of the harbour has already commenced. Parallel to this path ways will be built connecting the harbour.

Due to the construction work the Colombo Katharagama main road has been temporary closed from Mirijjawila to Hambanthota. The Galgala to Mahalewaya road has also been temporary closed due to this.

500 families have been removed from the areas of Mirijjawila and Rathupasgodella. They have been resettled in Siribopura new city and the government decided to compensate them.

The government of China has granted 40 billion rupees for the construction. 2000 hectares of land will be used for the construction of the harbour.
