NDRS requests to assist flood victims

National Disaster Relief Service requests all institutions and organizations to assist the flood victims.

They can contribute with dry rations, clothes, food for children and soap. Director of the Center N.D.K. Hettiarachchi says the clothes should be new and readymade ones and should be handed over to the relevant divisional secretariat divisions offices.

Over 85 thousand families have been displaced due to heavy rains in the last few days. 1,274 persons are now staying at 28 temporary camps. The government has given 29 million rupees to divisional secretaries through district secretaries as flood relief.

Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department said the water level of the Kelani Ganga is now receding as no substantial amount of rain was not recorded during the last 24 hours. The department hopes the flood situation will further recede during next 48 hours.

It is reported that 20 persons have been killed by floods. Mr. Hettiarachchi further said compensation has been provided for the relatives of those killed by the floods. District secretariats say the flood situation which has affected three districts are now declining. The water level of the Kalu Ganga is also receding. The coordination officer of the District Disaster Management Center Colonel Priyankara Abeyratne said several areas prone to earth slips have been identified in the Ehaliyagoda divisional secretariat division. He added that Ayagama, Kiriella, Elapatha divisional secretariat divisions of Rathnapura district are still inundated by floods.
