Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe raised a breach of privilege with Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara after mobs obstructed his path while he was on his way to Parliament this morning (June 05th).

Noting that strong punishment should be given to perpetrators if a people's representative is prevented from attending sittings, Mr. Lokubandara said he would refer the matter to the Parliamentary Privileges Committee.

As the speaker informed the House of his decision, ruling party members shouted slogans against the opposition leader and created an uproar.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Wickremesinghe's motorcade was blocked at the Parliament Roundabout by several vehicles.

Effigies of the opposition leader and LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran as well as several tyres were set ablaze by protestors.
