At least 17 terrorists were killed and more than 35 wounded on Sunday (June 8) as Army infantry and armour battalions forced into LTTE bunker positions located North of Janakapura and Kiriibbanwewa at Welioya during a multi-pronged offensive launched since the morning hours.

According to latest military reports, troops have gained total control over 5 LTTE strong points surrounding the LTTE's strategic 'one four base', despite heavy resistance by LTTE, Wanni sources said.

Meanwhile, 6 valiant soldiers have laid their lives in addition to 18 others who were reported wounded, Military Spokesperson Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

Heavy fighting is continuing as Army infantrymen continue to march forward backed by concentrated artillery and mortar fire at identified LTTE positions, military sources asserted. Scores of terrorist bodies were also observed scattered ahead of the bunker defences, sources said citing ground troops.
