Porn suspect remanded

Anuradhapura Additional Mgistrate remanded a manager of a popular IT institute in Anurdhapura till July 7 for allegedly uploading pornographic and paedophile material to the internet.

The Magistrate, Shivantha Manchanayaka ordered the Police to send the database of the computer used by the suspect to the Computer Technology Unit of the Colombo University for a report.

The Police had raided Simplex International Pte. Ltd., of Devanampiyatissapura on a search warrant issued by the Magistrate and arrested the suspect Theja Sri Atukorale along with the computer used by him for the alleged activity.

The Police producing the suspect informed e court that the CID had acted on a written complaint made by a customs officer in the US.

The suspect had uploaded the pornographic material using an address of one of his friends domiciled in the US called Sujeewa Ratnayaka. The Sri Lanka police working in close association with the US Police had tracked down the email address to locate and apprehend the suspect.

The additional Magistrate refused a request by the defence counsel to release the suspect on bail.

Inspector B.M.A. Sampath Kumara of the CID prosecuted while counsel Sajeewa Gunaratne appeared on behalf of the suspect.
