A Sri Lankan national who was caught with a fake passport at the airport on Friday told the police that he wanted to go Paris and work in hotels run by people of his country there.

Nataraj Shashikaran of Jaffna was caught early on Friday while he was to board the Air India flight for Paris via Mumbai. Immigration officials, who found one person short in the clearance list, checked the passports of all Paris-bound passengers and found that Shashikaran’s passport had a fake international departure seal.

Shashikaran reportedly told the police that he wanted to go Paris and seek asylum there. “He has told us that many from his countrymen do this and do not disclose their nationality,” said Assistant Commissioner of Police (Bengaluru International Airport) B.B. Ashok Kumar. The police are investigating how he was able get a passport here.
