KUWAIT CITY : A team from the General Department of Immigr-ation at the Ministry of Interior on Sunday arrested the owner of a general trading and contracting company in Kuwait for trading in visas and forging employment contracts, reliable security sources told Al-Rai. According to sources, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs received a complaint from the Sri Lankan Embassy against a general trading and contracting company for collecting KD 30,000 from 29 Sri Lankan expatriates in exchange for visit visas to Kuwait. The case was forwarded to the Interior Ministry for investigation. After monitoring the activities of the suspected company, the authorities inspected the company’s headquarters in Farwaniya and discovered that only four residential permits were registered under its name. They also found 29 expired visit visas for Sri Lankan expatriates issued by the special section in the Immigration Department for diplomats. During interrogation, the owner of the company said he is not trading in visas and accused the Pakistani ‘mandoub’ (company representative), identified as Iqbal, of charging KD 500 for the processing of a visit visa without his knowledge. Sources revealed the 29 Sri Lankans, who arrived in Kuwait earlier, are staying in a flat and are still waiting for the processing of their documents. Sources said the Sri Lankans went to their embassy with their visit visas before the expiry date, indicating the sponsor signed bogus employment contracts. Sources added the Sri Lankans were informed the visit visas are work permits and they would be given jobs upon arrival to Kuwait. Investigations are also going on to verify reports on the involvement of 15 other companies, including big establishments, in visa trading, sources disclosed.
