Public inconvenienced, says Magistrate
Mount Lavinia Magistrate issued notice on the Commissioner of Registration of Persons in connection with a case, where six persons taken into custody and produced in court apparently for possessing bogus national identity cards (NICs), which were later confirmed to be genuine by the Registration of Persons Department itself. The Department had later apologized to the persons to whom these NICs belonged.
When the case was taken up before Additional Magistrate Dharshika Wimalasiri, A. K. A. Piyatissa, representing the Legal Unit of the Registration of Persons Department gave evidence led by sergeant Rajapakse of Wellawatte Police.
The Magistrate queried as to how many members of the public had been put into similar inconvenient situations by such actions of the Registrations of Persons Department.
Investigations conducted by police constable Nayana Priya resulted in taking into custody the suspects along with their NICs. Police asserted that the NICs revealed discrepancies in security markings and also in the government emblem when subjected to scrutiny.
The suspects in the case were Pilanagodakandage Sugath Shantha Priya, Mohamed Riyad, Gamlath Ralage Wijebandara, Suresh, Yaddehi Nalini Priyadharshni and Batagoda Kankanamage Dominique.
A letter issued by the Registration of Persons Department was produced in court. Amongst its contents were an apology for discrepancies in Identity Cards issued by the Department.
Fraud Investigations Bureau is conducting further investigations and the case will be taken up again on August 14, 2008.
