Government imposes a new tax on mobile phones and motor vehicles

Local mobile telephone users and motor vehicle owners are worried about recent taxes on mobile phone bills and motor vehicle licenses .They said the government tries to end the usage of mobile phones and motor vehicles  .They said at present a number of taxes on phone bills were imposed by the government and the recent tax is Environmental Conservation Tax on motor vehicle licenses and mobile phone bills.
The  government  said it has imposed this new tax Environmental Conservation Tax on the communication and transportation sectors.
 A gazette notification pertaining to the imposition of an  was released last Friday. The gazette notice said  every user of a mobile telephone must pay two percent of their monthly telephone bills as an Environmental Conservation Tax.
 The Central Environment Authority said  the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission [TRC]  is the authority for the collection of the tax, which will come into operation from the 15th of this month. In addition, an annual tax of 50 thousand rupees will be levied from institutions owning television and broadcasting transmission towers. An environmental conservation tax has imposed on CFL light bulbs as well.
The CEA adds an environmental conservation tax will also be imposed on motor vehicle revenue licenses. The gazette notification was also released on Friday. Accordingly, a tax of 100 rupees from a motorcycle and 200 rupees from a motor car will be levied depending on the weight of the vehicle and the type of fuel used.
