The Great Betrayal of the Nation by Ranil Wickremasinghe

The well-known author Paul Harris in his address to a conference in Oslo in 2004 clearly analyzed what the Ceasefire Agreement signed in 2002 really meant for Sri Lanka. It was a wholesale sell out to the Tigers effectively canvassed by the scheming Norwegian conspirator Erik Solheim. Why did the then Prime Minister Wickremasinghe agree to the concessions granted to the LTTE? Was there a force behind this maneuvering?

Under the CFA, the LTTE had the following concessions:

A whole series of sophisticated strategies designed to occupy all the political and social space throughout the north and the east of the country . . . The strategies encompass all areas of public life and include:

01. Forcing government department heads to work for LTTE

02. Taxing civil servants 8% of salaries

03. Controlling business of government cooperatives and thereby obtaining a steady income

04. All contracts for government and NGO projects are to be carried out by LTTE approved contractors and income is thereby derived

05. Controlling and using all available government resources

06. Demeaning activities of competing political groups

07. Sending cadres into government areas in defiance of conditions of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)

08. Influencing and using teachers, students and labour unions to carry out hartals, demonstrations, picketing and protests

09. Erection of monuments to martyrs and LTTE figures

10. Influencing government servants to use LTTE headquarters in place of government facilities in the eastern province

11. Influencing civilians to make legal complaints via the LTTE, rather than to the police

12. Organizing mass 'Tamil awakening' rallies known as Pongu Tamils

13. Classes on Eelam in schools

14. Edicts on dress code for women instructing them to dress in traditional clothes.

15. Restrictions on businesses involved in private tutoring of schoolchildren.

16. The creation of a general psychosis of fear in coveted areas to be included in the state of Tamil Eelam. A psychosis of fear is being brought about by enforced conscription of youth into the LTTE, general coercion and extortion of funds from traders, especially the Muslim community.

17. In addition to the undermining of government control and authority, the enhancement of LTTE military capability is being undertaken through reconstruction of defences; accelerated recruitment; reinforcement of command posts and radio rooms with concrete allowed into LTTE areas under the MoU; smuggling of arms and ammunition; building up of arms and ammunition stockpiles in government areas; movement of heavy mortars and machine guns into the east; increased level of training; intensified reconnaissance on army, Special Task Force (STF) and police locations; and the reorganization of LTTE cadres into regiments. Military cadres are moving into government held areas under the conditions created by the Memorandum of Understanding and undertaking their missions with little impediment."

This shocking revelation shows the meteoric rise of the LTTE through the push in the arm given by the Ranil Wickremasinghe Government and it appears the people of Sri Lanka were not aware of this betrayal. What was the role played by Professor G L Peiris, the chief negotiator of the government who is now very desirous of joining the Mahinda Rajapakse Government? This man has already discouraged himself to serve in any government.

If the Government of Mahinda Rajapakse wants to get ahead to seek a just solution to the ethnic crisis, he has a great deal of undoing to do before he embarks with a positive programme. The situation now is not merely a Tamil question but a national issue that affects every Sri Lankan and just like LTTE is culpable as a terrorist force, the UNP too is as aiding and abetting this outfit and betraying the nation.
