The government has decided to make a land survey in the entire eastern province and develop it. According to the present land survey of Sri Lanka 9996 square kilometres is in the eastern province. A land survey is necessary in the east for the development works to be started in the east, said the Land Survey Minister, Jeevan Kumaratunga.

As a part of this new scheme, a map of the eastern province will be prepared with an aerial photograph taken from the air. Branches of Survey Department will be set up in all the districts of the east to ease the surveying works. Presently the captured Vakarai area is being surveyed according to this new scheme, he said further.
