161,415 landmines were cleared

161,415 landmines were cleared during the last 5 years under the government programme of making a landmine free Sri Lanka before 2008.

200 square kilometre areas were identified as land mine danger area. More than one million mines were planted in these areas according to a survey in 2002. Most of these mines are planted in the cultivation lands.
