The government has taken action to make the government officers work in both languages, Sinhala and Tamil in accordance with the constitution, said the Public Administration and Home Affairs, Secretary D. Dissanayake.

According to this, the new recruits to the government service from July 2007 should have proficiency in both languages, Sinhala and Tamil and this was made compulsory. They will be given five years time for this purpose.

They have to pass both languages in the GCE examination or they have to pass the special proficiency exam held by the Government Language Department. If they fail to prove their proficiency within this period their annual increments will be suspended.
