Evacuation of Muslims from North: Completion of 17 years
A resurgence demonstration in remembrance of the forced evacuation of Muslims from North by the LTTE is taking place at Aalankudah in Puttalam by 2.00 p.m. today. A declaration also will be issued.
On the orders from the LTTE, 17 years ago the Muslims of Jaffna had to flee, leaving their belongings, to places like Kurunegala, Anuradhapuram, Colombo and Panadura. Most of them fled to Puttalam and there are more than a lakh of Muslims living in 136 refugee camps.
Headed by the former Political Wing Head of the LTTE in Jaffna district, Ilamparithi alias Sinnathamby Mahalingam of Manthuvil, Chavakachcheri, the Tigers carried out brutal assaults and armed threats. As a result, the Muslims who lived in Jaffna for many generations had to flee and take refuge in many parts in the country.
The LTTE leadership and TNA parliamentarians speak high of humanitarianism and human rights continue to maintain silence on these tragedies of these people.
