Malaysia down Sri Lanka to emerge champs

KUANTAN: Malaysia emerged as the champions in the Third Asian Schools Under-18 hockey championship, beating Sri Lanka 4-0 in the final at the Kuantan Hockey Stadium yesterday. 

Mohd Azammi Adabi scored two penalty corner goals in the second and 12th minutes. Two minutes later, Mohd Nor Hafiz Abdul Ghafar stretched the lead to 3-0. The other goal was scored by Izuan Firdaus Mohd Tajuddin in the 43rd minute. 

Malaysia picked up three other awards. Mohd Azammi was named as the player of the match and Mohd Zakuan Saharizan took the player of the tournament award. Malaysia also won the fairplay trophy. 

The top scorer award went to Sri Lanka’s V.V. Rajamohan, who chalked up 10 goals. Singapore’s Jamal Sidique Peer took the best goalkeeper award. 

In the playoff for fifth place, Indonesia defeated Brunei 2-1. 

Final standings: 1. Malaysia, 2. Sri Lanka, 3. Thailand, 4. Singapore, 5. Indonesia, 6. Brunei.
