The government by allowing the construction of a tourist hotel at the summit of ‘Sri Pada’ and allowing reconstruction work at the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy without any consideration to its archeological value is engaged in a massive archeological destruction. These programmes are carried out claiming they are necessary for the development of the tourist industry.

It is said that paving the path from the entrance to ‘Paththirippuwa’ at Temple of the Tooth with concrete slabs is a part of this programme. The reconstruction work has commenced despite strong opposition from the Department of Archeology.

Meanwhile, Project Manager of the Sri Lanka Nature Forum Sajeewa Chamikara has charged that Somawathiya National Park in Polonnaruwa is in grave danger of being destroyed sooner than later as a result of the Wild Life and Conservation Department opening up the expanse for the building of hotels, illegal sand mining and the construction of a new highway.
