The President is planning to handover the chairmanship of the Eastern Provincial Council to the opposition and adjourn sittings for one month if the M.L.A.M. Hizbullah faction refused to support the UPFA.

The period of recess will be used to gain a majority, a top minister who is close to the president and one of the alliance’s top campaigners at the May 10th polls told ‘Lanka Dissent.’
The President is well aware of the predicament of Mr. Hizbullah and has made several proposals that will be profitable for the future of the Muslim leader as well as that of the eastern people, according to the minister.

The government, with the expectation that Mr. Hizbullah will receive the blessings of the eastern Muslim religious leaders to agree to the president’s suggestions, has arranged for his swearing in on May 21st as a minister in the council.
