An attempt to transport a load of banned and restricted items to the uncleared areas was foiled by the security forces at the Omanthai entry/exit point last evening.
The security forces, on suspicion, searched two lorries transporting essential items to the North and found 8120 torch batteries, 364 metres of green military uniform material, armour plates and other contraband hidden in the roof of the vehicle.

A driver of one lorry had been arrested while the other had got away, Police media spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekara said.
