Refuse to serve to own people is an enigma

Adjust font size: Decrease font Enlarge font
image The natives of north east who have passed out as doctors and refusing to serve their area people is an enigma, said the Health Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva in the Parliament, while responding to the questions raised by the opposition Parliamentarians, regarding the internship medical officers. We decided to assign the medical officers passing out of north east to serve their own people of the north east. But several have opposed this during the Health Ministry consultation meeting held in the Parliament on 03.09.2007. The well being of the patients is important to the government. I as the health minister don’t care about the threats. Health Ministry is functioning in the democratic way.

The Jaffna University Medical Faculty students who are well aware of the war disaster and the peoples suffering in their area must come forward to serve in their native land at least for two years, said the council for human dignity. It is a shame to ignore the request to serve in their soil, where they were educating in the medical faculty for the last five years, it said further.

The Jaffna University acting vice chancellor R. Kumaravel, and Medical Faculty dean K. Sivapalan have made a humble request to the passing out medical students to serve their own people of Jaffna peninsula. The Jaffna Regional Director of Health Services A. Ketheesvaran has also made a request in the same manner.

There are 38 hospitals in Jaffna and 7 medical officers of Health Divisions. There are only 9 medical officers in Jaffna, where there should be 100 medical officers. There is a cadre for 17 medical specialists but there is none. 24 retired medical officers are working on contract basis with difficulties.

But the passing out Jaffna university medical students have turned down all these requests and have left for the southern part of the country.
